The Solution to Ilegal Immigration

The problem of "illegal" immigration can be solved at the stroke of a pen: legalize immigration.

I didn't hear the President's immigration speech, but I must comment on one paragraph I've read:

"We're a nation of laws, and we must enforce our laws. We're also a nation of immigrants, and we must uphold that tradition, which has strengthened our country in so many ways. These are not contradictory goals."

The actual truth is: We're a nation of laws, and we must enforce or repeal our laws.

The problem of "illegal" immigration can be solved at the stroke of a pen: legalize immigration. Screen all you want (though I want damn little), but remove the quotas. Phase them out over a 5- or 10-year period. Grant immediate, unconditional amnesty to all "illegal" immigrants.

In this connection, it is gruesomely fascinating how scared are the pro-immigration factions (in both parties) of the word "amnesty." In the students riots of the late 60s, the student thugs demanded amnesty. (And they got it, of course.) Now, all of a sudden, "amnesty" has become a dirty word. Why? I think it is because of the moral cowardice of the pro-immigration movement.

I admire those who broke our rotten, rights-defying anti- immigration laws to come here. These brave people knew it was better to live in America under a stigma, in the semi-shadows, than as "legals" in their native countries.

John Tierney's column in today's NY Times makes some good points with great verve:

"A porous southern border is supposedly no longer tolerable now that terrorists have declared war on America and are threatening even more catastrophic attacks.

"But if terrorists are smart enough to plan such an attack, they're smart enough to get into the United States, no matter how many agents and troops are on the Mexican border. If terrorists have the determination to train for years, if they can pay for flight lessons or anthrax or a nuclear bomb, then they can easily bribe or forge their way into America--or waltz in with legitimate visas.

"Mohamed Atta did not have to hire a coyote or swim across the Rio Grande. He and the other hijackers entered the country legally. The 500,000 or so people who manage to sneak in from Mexico each year are a minuscule fraction--about 1 percent--of the tourists and students and other visitors who enter America legally.

"Mexico is not the preferred route of the suspected terrorists caught so far because they prefer more convenient options, like the Canadian border. Even if the northern border were sealed with the Great Wall of Saskatchewan, there would still be thousands of miles of unsecured coastline--and plenty of drug runners with boats and planes who would have no trouble delivering a terrorist or a suitcase bomb."

"... the immigrants now coming across the Mexican border do not want to sack our cities. They're not about to pillage our granaries or march home with Americans in chains. They just want to mow our lawns and clean our offices.

They're coming to feed us, not take our food, yet we're demanding that our leaders keep them out. No Mexican busboys! No Guatemalan cooks! Stop them before they grill again!"

And I reiterate that those who want to reduce Mexican immigration (I am not among them) should be calling for the U.S. to exert diplomatic pressure on the Mexican government to establish capitalism there.

I'm seeing national sovereignty as the real issue here. Dr. Binswanger, I can see the truth of your arguments. Terrorism is usually carried out as part of false flag government funded operations. Border control would not stop this. I guess we should be thankful that not many people do anything about anything or life would be too interesting, perhaps? I certainly would come here from Mexico if I was there. Yet, because I am here I wish to stop illegal immigration. When you say legalize it, I think you mean abolish all laws that interfere with corporate influence. My thinking currently, is that I should support the law of the U.S. against foreign economic invasion (what little of it is left to pillage) as a way of protecting my inalienable sovereign rights as an individual. I want to hear more about how we could take the money we spend on protecting against illegal immigration, as well as, the money we lose in providing government services to these non-taxpayers who send their money back to Mexico and spend it on building businesses in Mexico for them to work at. Why isn't this a reasonable compromise? I do see borders (however imaginary and arbitrary) as real representations of the integrity of the individual against a fascist collective. We're naturally citizens of a global or intergallactic village. We don't need a New World Order to deliver this to us.

I believe the pursuit of money to obtain happiness is very sad and produces severe retardation in the elite and slave classes. I think free energy is the answer. Like the suckerfish on the body of the shark. We the people can live. The roles of vampire and victim can reverse. The few visionary leaders finally receiving more power than they can imagine and adventuring forth needing to put aside their focus on controlling others in order to carry out their objectives as new tech will outperform. The meek shall finally inherit the earth - only it won't be the grand prize it currently is.

Actually the previous comment is incorrect. Illegal immigrants to pay taxes. They have money taken out of their paychecks every week, just like the rest of us.(assuming they are not paid in cash) not to mention they pay sales tax on everything they buy, just like you do. They pay taxes, but will not get that money back, because they cannot file for their yearly income tax refund.

So, yes, we should limit immigration for now, because there are few jobs now. But the real culprit is not the illegal aliens- the real bad guys are the ones hiring them, because they know that they can pay them very little, work them really hard, and they cannot complain.

Chad Warren, you seem to be concerned with "Economic Invasion", yet you fail to specify what such a term entails. Is it the granting of welfare programs to immigrants that you think of? Do you really think an online website called "Capitalism Magazine" would support *any* welfare programs? Or are you concerned that free, rational individuals wish to trade their labour for money to other free, rational individuals for far higher wages than they get in their country of origin? Obviously, you are not for individual rights of any kind.

You seem to like the metaphor of selfishness in the form of a vampire. But let's face, would it be in anyone's self-interest if the laws of the jungle were applied? Perhaps you would counter that a dictator is selfish, but what is power and wealth when you are plagued with paranoia? And how could you defend such a premise while denying it to the rest of the human species? You cannot, at least not in reason. So there you have it: it is either individual rights, or brutal anarchy. Pick your system.

The arrival of illegals into this country should not be the major concern for those who dislike illegal immigration, it should be how can we stop these illegals from wanting to come to the US. The answer, as mentioned in this article is to help promote capatalist ideologies in the oppresive states from which they come.
